《黃色潛水艇》最早發行于1969年2月，制作人AlBrodax就因這首"Yellow Submarine"（原收錄于1966年專輯Revolver）突發奇想，再根據67年專輯《Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band》所描述的幻覺影像，而有了這具體的動畫構想。

　　電影《黃色潛水艇》是一部插畫藝術創作，畫風、設計自成一格，與迪斯尼唯美人物造型、浪漫故事情節全然不同。我們可將它視為一種視覺藝術，它融合了波普藝術（Pop Art）中采取的一連串游戲性動態組合，且游走于現是與非現實之間，非常吻合披頭士60年代中晚期偏愛的超自然冥想主張，因此在《黃色潛水艇》中可看到色彩繽紛的圖像，過多裝飾性的設計，類似這樣的風格動畫并不多見。

　　1999年全新版《黃色潛水艇》共收錄披頭士15首歌曲（1965到67年創作的綜合體），所不同的是30年前版本只有6首披頭士作品，其余7首全是制作人George Martin所寫的弦樂演奏曲，現在已將原來《黃色潛水艇》漏收的這9首重新數字化發行以饗歌迷。15首歌有其共同性、也有其特色，我們可聽到"Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"、"All You Need Is Love"現場歡娛的氣氛；也可聽到像"When I'm 64"、"Nowhere Man"節奏輕快，頗親和的童腔式唱法；以及抽里現實的" Love You To"、"Lucy in the Sky with the Diamonds"、"Only a Northern Song"。

　　 通常電影原聲帶（Soundtrack）針對劇情而譜寫歌曲，《黃色潛水艇》披頭士只寫了4首歌，分別是"All Together Now"、"It's All Too Much"、"Hey Bulldog"、"Only a Norther Song"，所以我們寧可把Soundtrack改稱為Songtrack還比較貼切。
